How Alberta home care agency websites stack up (Oct 2026)
On October 18, 2026, Snipe Ventures ran automated checks on the public websites of 91 Alberta home care agencies, franchise locations and senior residences. The headline numbers below cover the 56 independent agencies and non-profits in that group. Chain and franchise location pages are reported separately because a few national templates account for most of them.
No agency is named. Every number comes from the raw data file, and the method and its limits are at the end.
Headline findings (independent agencies, n=56)
32 of 56 homepages (57%) have no inquiry form. A family has to find the contact page first. Counting contact pages, 51 of 56 (91%) have a form somewhere. Among chain location pages, 25 of 27 (93%) put a form on the page itself.

What operators can fix this month
- Put a short inquiry form on the homepage, with name, phone, a few words about the need and a best time to call. Then make sure someone replies the same day. The inquiry guide and inquiry-to-care process cover the reply side.
- Make the phone number a tel: link in the header, so a family member on a phone can call in one tap.
- Say how funding works. If you accept CDHCI or self-managed care clients, say so on a page families can find. CDHCI explained for agencies has the details.
- Give families a number or a range, even "most clients pay between X and Y per hour", or explain what changes the price. The website cost guide and the website checklist cover what to publish.
- Replace "email your résumé" with a short apply form that works on a phone and sends an automatic reply. See hire caregivers faster in Alberta and writing caregiver job postings.
- Link your privacy policy from every page with a form. Alberta's PIPA applies to personal information collected through those forms. The OIPC's PIPA overview is a starting point. Get advice for your situation.
- Describe your images and allow zoom. Add alt text to photos that carry meaning, and remove maximum-scale=1 or user-scalable=no from the viewport tag. The accessibility checklist lists the rest.
- List the communities you serve by name and add LocalBusiness structured data with the same details. Showing up for "home care near me" walks through it.
To see where your own site stands, the free home care website checker asks ten questions and gives you a ranked fix list. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.
Method
- Sample. Snipe's prospect list of 105 Alberta home care agencies, franchise locations and senior residences, built from the ABSeniors directory and web searches. 14 were excluded: no own website (3), a duplicate (1), robots.txt disallows crawling (1), a dead page (1), construction mode (1), an expired TLS certificate (1), and 6 that returned a bot challenge, server error or TLS failure on two tries. That leaves 91: 56 independent agencies and non-profits, 27 chain or franchise location pages from 9 brands, and 8 residences.
- Pages. For each site, the homepage plus up to three pages linked from it: contact, careers and a pricing, funding or "how it works" page.
- Fetching. One plain HTTP request per page, then one headless Chrome load at phone size so content added by JavaScript is visible. No more than one request per second to any host, robots.txt respected, and a user agent that identifies the survey and links to snipeventures.com.
- Checks. Text and HTML pattern matching. The full definitions are in the methodology note that ships with the data.
Limitations
- The sample isn't random. It is one company's prospect list, weighted to Calgary (28 of the 56 independents) and Edmonton (11). It leaves out agencies that aren't in the ABSeniors directory or didn't show up in search.
- It's one snapshot. Each site was checked once, on October 18, 2026. Sites change.
- The checks are automated. A form that only appears after a click, or inside an unusual widget, can be missed, so the "no form" counts are an upper bound. A regex can't tell a funding rate from an agency's own rate, or a passing mention of AHS from a real explanation.
- Some things weren't checked. Text size, colour contrast, keyboard use, whether forms reach anyone, and how fast anyone replies all need a person to test.
- Mentions are counted on the pages checked. An agency that explains CDHCI on a page we didn't fetch is counted as not mentioning it.
- Chain numbers mostly measure templates. One brand supplies 9 of the 27 chain pages.

Full methodology
Data collected Sunday, October 18, 2026, between about 8:45 and 9:05 AM MDT, by Snipe Ventures (Calgary).
Sample
Source: Snipe's own prospect list of Alberta home care agencies, franchise locations and senior residences (105 rows). It was built from the ABSeniors directory and web searches, so it is a convenience sample, not a random or complete census of Alberta providers.
Exclusions (14): 2 rows pointed at a directory listing rather than the operator's own site; 1 row had no website; 1 was a second page of a site already in the sample; 1 site's robots.txt disallows crawling; 1 listed franchise page returned 404; 1 site showed only a construction-mode page; 1 site was unreachable because its TLS certificate had expired; 6 returned a bot challenge, a server error or a TLS failure on two attempts (raw HTTP and headless Chrome).
Analyzed: 91 sites, in three groups. Independent agencies and non-profits: 56 (the headline group). Calgary 28, Edmonton 11, 17 elsewhere in Alberta or multi-city. Chain and franchise location pages: 27, from 9 brands. Location pages share a brand template, so this group mostly measures a handful of national templates. One brand supplies 9 of the 27. Senior residences: 8. Too few for percentages to mean much. Reported as counts.
How pages were fetched
Pages per site: the homepage, plus up to three pages linked from it: the first link that looks like a contact page, a careers or jobs page, and a pricing, rates, funding or "how it works" page. Links are matched by link text or URL.
Politeness: at most 1 request per second to any one host; robots.txt checked before every page, for both the survey user agent token and *; the user agent was a normal Chrome string with SnipeSiteSurvey/1.0 (+https://www.snipeventures.com/about) appended.
Two passes: a plain HTTP fetch recorded status, HTML size and time to first byte. Each page that returned 200 was then loaded once in headless Chrome at a 390 × 844 phone viewport, so forms, phone links and footer years injected by JavaScript are visible. Checks use both versions. A rendered page is ignored if it was a bot challenge or less than half the text of the raw page.
Retries: 14 homepages failed the first pass (rate limits, TLS errors, bot challenges). They got one more raw attempt after a pause, then one Chrome load. Seven were recovered this way; five of them only through Chrome, so they have no size or timing figures. Contact, careers and pricing pages for recovered sites were fetched the same way.
Checks (all automated)
| Check | What counts |
|---|---|
| HTTPS | Homepage served over HTTPS after redirects. |
| Mobile viewport | A viewport meta tag with width=device-width or initial-scale. |
| Viewport blocks zoom | Viewport sets user-scalable=no or maximum-scale=1, which stops pinch-zoom on some phones. |
| Meta description | Meta description of 20+ characters. |
| Any structured data | Any JSON-LD or microdata type on the homepage. |
| LocalBusiness structured data | A LocalBusiness-family type (LocalBusiness, MedicalBusiness, ProfessionalService, any Business type, MedicalOrganization and similar). |
| Tap-to-call on homepage | At least one telephone link on the homepage. |
| Email shown | An email address in the text or a mailto link on the homepage or contact page. |
| Inquiry form (home / any) | A form with a text area or 3+ visible fields (search and newsletter forms excluded), an embedded form iframe, or a link to a hosted intake form. "Any" adds the contact page. |
| Privacy / accessibility / careers links | A homepage link whose text or URL contains "privacy", "accessib", or points to a careers, jobs, join-our-team, employment or hiring page. |
| Online way to apply | On that careers page: a form with file upload, a job form that isn't the sitewide contact form, a link to a job board or applicant system, or an Apply link. "Email/mail resume only" means the page asks for a résumé by email or offers only a mail link. |
| Named Alberta communities | Number of distinct Alberta communities (from a list of 77) named on the homepage. |
| CDHCI / self-managed care / AHS | CDHCI or client directed home care; self-managed care or SMC; Alberta Health Services, AHS, Alberta Health or Primary Care Alberta, on any checked page. |
| Hourly price shown | A dollars-per-hour figure (for example "$38/hour") or "starting at $NN" on any checked page. It does not tell an agency's own rate apart from a quoted funding rate. |
| First step described | Phrases such as "free consultation", "free in-home assessment", "how it works", "our process", "getting started". |
| Copyright year | Latest year in a copyright notice on the homepage. |
| Image text descriptions | Homepage images (1-pixel trackers removed). Missing alt versus empty alt="" are counted separately. |
Not checked
- Text size and colour contrast. These need a full rendering and pixel analysis to be reliable, so they were left out.
- Whether forms work, where they send, or how fast anyone replies.
- Keyboard access, focus order, screen reader behaviour, or anything else a person would need to test by hand.
- Full page weight (images, scripts, fonts). Only the HTML document was measured.
- A redirect from http to https. The crawl server could not reach port 80, so this check was dropped.
Validation
An earlier hand review of the same list recorded viewport, inquiry form and click-to-call for 71 of the analyzed sites.
Viewport matched on all 71. Click-to-call matched on 69.
Inquiry form disagreed on 10. In 6 of those, this audit found a form the earlier review missed, because it also checks the contact page and the rendered page.
In the other 4, the earlier review saw a form and this audit did not. Two were re-checked by hand. One has no form, only downloadable PDF applications. The other loads a form plugin's scripts, but no form appeared in the raw page, the rendered page or a third-party fetch. Treat the "no form" counts as an upper bound.
